Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Library Service in partnership with the local authority's Social Inclusion Unit are pleased to announce the Aperture photo competition which has €2,000 in prizes! This year we are asking you to photograph people or places in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown which represent social inclusion and diversity.

The competition runs until October 3rd and we will be accepting your printed entries along with completed application forms from July 25th in all DLR local libraries, County Hall in Dún Laoghaire and other locations.

Social inclusion is defined in many different ways, but one of the most common understandings is that through acting inclusively, we can try to ensure that everyone feels a part of the community - no matter their age, ability, nationality, religion, or any of the many other characteristics which makes our society diverse.

This could mean capturing people going about their daily business - images of the 'every day' which, to you, demonstrates how social inclusion is alive and well within our community. Or this could mean challenging the notion of inclusion, and using a photograph to question how inclusive a society we really are.

Or it could mean snapping images which highlight the growing diversity of the County. It's up to you.

As 2008 is also the EU Year for Intercultural Dialogue, a special prize is on offer for the photograph which best captures a good example of 'intercultural dialogue'. As outlined by the NCCRI, the national co-ordinating body for the EU Year, it is essential that communities, service providers, civil society, government "promote dialogue as a process in which all those living in the EU and member states can improve their ability to live together in a way that acknowledges and celebrates, diversity but which also promotes common values."

The entries will be judged on originality and how well they speak to the competition theme, and secondary to this will be an assessment on technical merit and originality.

Each entrant can submit 3 photographs. The prizes awarded will be €750 for first place, €500 for second and €250 for 3rd place. The EU Year for Intercultural Dialogue prize will be a separate €500. First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded and shortlisting will apply.
